Hunt for the sperm whale was, for a century, one of the main economic activities of the Azorean people. Practiced by fearless men, the hunt was made with harpoons and sailboats. Today, this whale, like the more than 20 species of cetaceans that live in or pass through the Azores, are protected species in this sanctuary where they chose to live, feed or reproduce. The activity became famous in Faial and Pico, but other islands have already established their reputation. Besides São Miguel, there are boat exits from all the islands of the Central Group of the Azores. The observation of these fantastic beings can be made all year round, but the best time and the one that it is advised is from May to October because of the sea conditions. The ultimate exponent of this experience is the possibility to swim with dolphins that some companies offer in a responsible way.
